The University of Oregon, commonly known as simply UO, is a coeducational public research university in Eugene, OR, which is the county seat of Lane County and the second largest city in the state of Oregon. The city was founded in 1862 and was named after its founder, Eugene Franklin Skinner, who raised the 1st cabin in the area, which was used as a trading post, being officially registered as a post office, in 1850.
UO was established in 1872, on October 12, by the Oregon State Legislature, and was founded with the help of Eugene’s residents, who struggled to finance the construction of the educational institution, raising money through various fundraising events, such as festivals and sales.
The university is home of the Oregon Bach Festival, which was founded in 1970, by Helmuth Rilling, who was a German conductor, along with UO professor, Royce Saltzman, being known today as an international program that attracts hundreds of musicians and thousands of attendees, every year.
The athletic teams from UO are known as the Oregon Ducks, which compete in the NCAA Division I-A, in various sports, winning a total of 14 NCAA Championships, including 60 NCAA individual track and field championships. The sports, in which the Oregon Ducks compete, include football, basketball, baseball, tennis, golf, soccer and many others.
The mascot of the University of Oregon is currently the fighting duck. For decades, the mascot of UO’s athletic teams has been the popular Disney character – Donald Duck – thanks to an agreement made with Walt Disney, in 1947. However, a formal contract was not written up, until 1973, and due to that fact, the mascot has been challenged several times in the past years.
